THE MÉMOIRES séries of collage and paintings is part of an effort to record what goes on in the mind. Using multiple photographic reference, I document the various subjects and the emotions they communicate through the use of vivid colours, sharp angles and organic lines. Working with layers of mixed media, I create a composition reminiscent of the fleeting moment.

I explore new materials and techniques using translucent paper as a support. I use graphite, coloured pencil, paper, canvas, acrylic & gesso in layers of various transparency. I have also been using vintage photographs and postcard found in my favourite local antique shop for the nostalgia they evoke.

JULIE BRETON ART | WORK IN PROGRESS

I am taking a breather from my regular art practice to experiment with new support and media. It is very exciting to work with translucent Yupo paper as well as rag paper which is proving to be more difficult. With these study, I am hoping to breakthrough to a more intuitive style of painting.

I am purposely moving away from representational work all together to explore form and colour. I want to discover where intuition will take me as oposed to concern myself with aesthetics. You can follow my progress on Instagram below.

JULIE BRETON ART | BOTANICAL DRAWING

The BOTANICAL DRAWINGS are part of the GLASSHOUSE series, a body of work inspired by the Victorian glasshouses and conservatories that once symbolized prosperity, discovery, and progress. While many of these remarkable structures have disappeared or fallen into decline, their history continues to inspire my imagination.

Working on translucent Yupo paper allows me to build layers of drawing, paint, and collage that interact with light in unexpected ways. The transparency of the surface echoes the luminous quality of the glasshouses themselves, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere throughout the work.

Using charcoal, graphite, pastel, acrylic paint, ink, and collage, I create imagined botanical worlds inspired by the exotic plant collections that once filled these grand structures. Loose linework, layered marks, and subtle colour shifts suggest leaves, petals, and fragments of vegetation rather than specific specimens, inviting the viewer to complete the story.

When backed with a neutral or coloured surface, the translucency of the paper reveals additional layers of colour and texture, allowing each piece to transform with its surroundings. You can follow this series progress on Instagram.
