I’m pleased to share that a selection of my work is now available through Matthieu Dubuc Gallery in Paris.

As a French-Canadian artist, having my work shown in Paris is especially meaningful to me. I have long been drawn to the city’s extraordinary artistic history, particularly Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, when it became a meeting place for artists and new ideas. The work of Henri Matisse, particularly his fearless approach to colour, has had a lasting influence on the way I think about painting.

There is something wonderful about seeing paintings created in my studio find their way to a city that has occupied such an important place in my imagination. Seeing my own work there feels like a connection between the artists and places that have inspired me and the work I am creating today.

I’m honoured to have my work shown alongside established international artists including Piotr Strelnik, Daoud and Diana Sanchez. The gallery brings together artists from diverse backgrounds and practices, creating a dialogue between different cultures, perspectives and artistic voices.

For me, this is an exciting new chapter and an opportunity to deepen my connection with the Parisian art world.

The minimal botanical drawings and collages from the GLASSHOUSE series are now availbale on the website. These are made on transluscent Yupo paper and come with interchangeable neutral gray background.

Many of them are 11”x14” making them ideal for framing. They look great on their own, as a group or part of a gallery wall.

The BOTANICAL DRAWINGS are part of the GLASSHOUSE series, inspired by Victorian glasshouses and the exotic plants once collected and displayed within them. Their architecture, history and atmosphere became a starting point for exploring botanical forms through loose linework, layered marks and subtle fields of colour.

Working on translucent Yupo paper allows drawing, paint and collage to overlap in unexpected ways. Charcoal, graphite, pastel, acrylic and ink move between the layers, while the transparency of the surface creates a sense of light and depth. Rather than depicting specific plants, the drawings suggest fragments of vegetation—part observation, part memory and imagination.

GLASSHOUSE ABSTRACT SERIES

The GLASSHOUSE series is inspired by the Victorian glasshouses and conservatories that once symbolized prosperity, discovery, and progress. Today, many survive only as remnants of another era—abandoned structures slowly reclaimed by nature.

I am fascinated by vintage photographs of their opulent grandeur and imagine them filled to capacity with lush tropical plants and rare botanicals competing for light beneath soaring glass ceilings. Built to showcase exotic collections from around the world, these extraordinary spaces reflected the optimism and ambitions of a rapidly changing society.

JULIE BRETON ART | WORK IN PROGRESS

As the modern era emerged and cultural values shifted, many of these magnificent structures fell into decline. Their fading grandeur serves as a reminder that even the most ambitious creations are shaped by the passage of time.

In this series, lush botanicals coexist with unexpected colours, abstract forms, and contemporary mark-making. The work explores the intersection of nature and culture, past and present, creating imagined landscapes where history, memory, and transformation converge.
