On April 14th, I had the chance to speak with CBC Marie Villeneuve on the radio show Phare Ouest. The live interview at the CBC Vancouver studio covered my ATMOSPHÈRE art exhibition, living in Nelson and my current work inspired by Flaubert and the French culture.

J'ai eu la chance d'être interviewé par Marie Villeneuve pour l'émission de radio Phare Ouest, le 14 Avril dernier. L'entrevue, "live" au studio de Radio-Canada à Vancouver, a couver mon exposition ATMOSPHÈRE, la vie à Nelson et mon nouveau travail inspiré par Flaubert et la culture francophone.

ATMOSPHÈRE ART EXHIBITION

JULIE BRETON | SOI-MÊME - BE YOURSELF

Atmosphère is a new exhibition inspired by the cloudy mountain winter sky of British-Colombia. It explores the similarities between atmospheric conditions and emotions.

These paintings along with a few others will be on display at the Centre culturel francophone de Vancouver from April 13 to May 13, 2016. The public opening is on Thursday April 14, 2016 from 6pm to 8pm. Wine and cheese will be served.

I hope to meet many of you for my first Vancouver art show!

JULIE BRETON | DISSIPATION

Atmosphère est une nouvelle exposition inspirée par le ciel nuageux hivernal des montagnes de Colombie-Britannique. Ces oeuvres explorent les similarités entre les conditions atmosphériques et les émotions.

Cette série et plusieurs autres oeuvres seront exposées au Centre culturel francophone de Vancouver du 13 avril au 13 mai, 2016. Le vernissage, ouvert à tous, aura lieu jeudi le 14 avril 2016, de 18 h 00 à 20 h 00.  Vins et fromages seront servis.

Ceci est ma premiere exposition à Vancouver, j'ai bien hâte de vous y rencontrer!

I am lucky enough to live in a majestic part of the world, next to glacial lakes, snowy mountain peaks and magnificent ancient trees. Here we can hike to glaciers and be inspired by natural beauty every day.

Here is MACBETH GLACIER from Monica Meadows North of Kaslo - The inspiration behind my textural abstract painting - Strangely the glacier did not get it's name from Shakespeare but from it's proximity to Duncan Lake which was named after the 11th king of Scotland. Macbeth, one of his generals rose to throne after killing King Duncan. A chilling and complicated tale on how to name a glacier.

J'ai la chance inouïe de vivre à proximité de lacs glaciaires, de sommets enneigés et d'arbres millénaires majestueux. Ici, nous ne pouvons faire autre que d'être inspirés par la beauté du paysage quotidiennement. Nous avons même accès à plusieurs glaciers et sentiers de randonnées alpins. 

Voici le GLACIER MACBETH vu de Monica Meadows au nord de Kaslo - l'inspiration pour mon oeuvre. Curieusement, le nom du glacier n'a rien à voir avec Shakespeare. Il a été nommé en raison de sa proximité du lac Duncan qui porte le nom du 11ème roi d'Écosse. Macbeth, un de ses généraux, obtient le trône après avoir assassiné le Roi Duncan. Voici donc une histoire de désignation de glacier à la fois compliquée et terrifiante.

Exasperated with Madame Bovary's character in Gustave Flaubert's classic French novel, I was inspired to paint an abstract with colours reminding me of that era. The result is a textural use of blush against a moody blue background.

Flaubert's novel takes place in provincial France and follows Emma Bovary's adulterous life. It caused quite a commotion and was attacked for obscenity by public prosecutors of the time. 

Published in 1856, the novel is now part of the public domain and is considered a master piece of French literature.

Exaspérée par le personnage de Madame Bovary dans le roman historique de Gustave Flaubert, j'ai décidée de peindre en utilisant des couleurs me rappelant cette époque. L'oeuvre avec ses textures, est une étude de couleurs blanc cassé et rose pâle sur fond tumultueux de bleu foncé.

Le roman de Flaubert se déroule près de Rouen en Normandie. Il raconte l'histoire d'Emma Bovary femme aldutère aux prises d'un ennuie totale de la vie provinciale. L'auteur fut pursuivit en justice pour "Outrage à la morale publique, religieuse et aux bonnes moeurs". Publiée en 1856, l'oeuvre fait maintenant parti du domaine publique.

I framed this artwork for myself. I am glad I did. Everytime I see it I am reminded how I love working with colour, transparency and texture. It inspires me to get into the studio and create some more.
