THE MÉMOIRES séries of collage and paintings is part of an effort to record what goes on in the mind. Using multiple photographic reference, I document the various subjects and the emotions they communicate through the use of vivid colours, sharp angles and organic lines. Working with layers of mixed media, I create a composition reminiscent of the fleeting moment.

I explore new materials and techniques using translucent paper as a support. I use graphite, coloured pencil, paper, canvas, acrylic & gesso in layers of various transparency. I have also been using vintage photographs and postcard found in my favourite local antique shop for the nostalgia they evoke.

JULIE BRETON ART | WORK IN PROGRESS

I am taking a breather from my regular art practice to experiment with new support and media. It is very exciting to work with translucent Yupo paper as well as rag paper which is proving to be more difficult. With these study, I am hoping to breakthrough to a more intuitive style of painting.

I am purposely moving away from representational work all together to explore form and colour. I want to discover where intuition will take me as oposed to concern myself with aesthetics. You can follow my progress on Instagram below.

JULIE BRETON ART | BOTANICAL DRAWING

Inspired by Victorian Era Glasshouses I started to draw and paint on transluscent Yupo paper. I like the transparency I get with this support and how it reacts to the different media I experiment with. I create imaginary landsacpes and botanical worlds using charcoal, graphite, pastel, acrylic paint, ink and even collage.

Because the paper is translucent the artwork and it’s colours are finally revealed when backed with a neutral grey or colorful cardstock. You can follow this series progress on Instagram.

JULIE BRETON | ART EXPLORATION

In an attempt to discover and grow as an artist I often experiment with new media, supports and subjects. I work with transparent velum to which I add layers of graphite, acrylic paint, coloured pencil, dry pastel & markers. I see what happens and then adjust from there trying to find new materials, media and subjects to work with.

With a specific subject in mind, I stain raw canvas with dark colours followed by layers of lighter hues. I draw marks with graphite, charcoal, pastel and conté blending them to the previous layers. I even work with gigantic canvases on the grass outside the studio. These all serve one purpose, to open up my mind and grow as an artist.

GLASSHOUSE ABSTRACT SERIES

JULIE BRETON ART | TROPICAL LUST

JULIE BRETON ART | TROPICAL LUST

I am intrigued by the changes that occurred at the beginning of the 20th century and how they brought about the birth of the modern era. One things that still stands today is some of the architecture and buildings of that time. I am especially fascinated by the Victorian glasshouses that are now decrepit, abandonned and left for the vegetation to regain it's stake on the land. I get inspired from seeing vintage photos of their opulent grandeur and the social status they came to represent. I imagine them filled to capacity with lush tropicals and rare botanicals competing for light.

JULIE BRETON ART | GLASSHOUSE SERIES - LUSH

I can't help but think that at the same time, the growth of the industrial revolution was bringing upon new ideology and cultural shifts. And so with time, these impressive structures became a thing of the past as for the exuberance of the era. This artwork series depicts the polarization of old and new ideas with lush botanicals surounded by unexpected shapes and colours. You can follow my progress on Instagram below.
