JULIE BRETON ART | BOTANICAL DRAWING

Inspired by Victorian Era Glasshouses I started to draw and paint on transluscent Yupo paper. I like the transparency I get with this support and how it reacts to the different media I experiment with. I create imaginary landsacpes and botanical worlds using charcoal, graphite, pastel, acrylic paint, ink and even collage.

Because the paper is translucent the artwork and it’s colours are finally revealed when backed with a neutral grey or colorful cardstock. You can follow this series progress on Instagram.

Originals from the ATMOSPHERE series and many others will be available for online sale starting today June 30, 2018. You can view many of the pieces and even grab some prints and small originals in Nelson at Bellaflora Studio on Herridge Lane.

The series explores the similarities between emotions and atmospheric conditions. It has been created mostly during the stormy British-Columbia winter months.

JULIE BRETON | ART EXPLORATION

In an attempt to discover and grow as an artist I often experiment with new media, supports and subjects. I work with transparent velum to which I add layers of graphite, acrylic paint, coloured pencil, dry pastel & markers. I see what happens and then adjust from there trying to find new materials, media and subjects to work with.

With a specific subject in mind, I stain raw canvas with dark colours followed by layers of lighter hues. I draw marks with graphite, charcoal, pastel and conté blending them to the previous layers. I even work with gigantic canvases on the grass outside the studio. These all serve one purpose, to open up my mind and become a better artist.

GLASSHOUSE ABSTRACT SERIES

JULIE BRETON ART | TROPICAL LUST

JULIE BRETON ART | TROPICAL LUST

I am intrigued by the changes that occurred at the beginning of the 20th century and how they brought about the birth of the modern era. I am also fascinated with old buildings. Even more if the building in question is decrepit, abandonned and left for the vegetation to regain it's stake on the land, as for Victorian era glasshouses. I get chills from seeing vintage photos of their opulent grandeur and the social status they came to represent. I imagine them filled to capacity with lush tropicals and rare botanicals competing for light.

I can't help but think that at the same time, the growth of the industrial revolution was bringing upon new ideology and cultural shifts. And so with time, these impressive structures became a thing of the past. This artwork series depicts the polarization of old and new ideas with lush botanicals surounded by unexpected shapes and colours. You can follow my progress on Instagram below.

STYLE AT HOME MAGAZINE

I am beyond excited to see my art featured in the July edition of Style at Home magazine in an article titled The New Modern. See how Joanna Vagelatos decorated around the homeowner's art collection in this elegant newly built home of East Vancouver Kensington-Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood. Interior Design by JV Design Group photography by Janis Nicolay.

This abstract painting on the right, titled Madame Bovary, is inspired from the French literary classic by Gustave Flaubert.

PRÉMONITION

JULIE-BRETON-VANCOUVER-ABSTRACT.JPG

This painting from the Émotions series inspired by the classic French novel Madam Bovary is one of my favorites. I had been searching for the perfect title for a few days when, on the eve of my 29th birthday (give or take a few years), a meteorite entered the atmosphere passing over Nelson to crash in the mountains nearby. It produced a flash of light and a deafening rumble only Thor could be proud of. The next morning I knew this painting should be called Premonition. This can only mean that the next 45 years will be amazing. Hold on to your hat Picasso!

Picasso j'arrive!

SUMMER ART SHOWS

I really enjoyed working with Flaubert's literary master piece, Madame Bovary, to achieve a series of layered abstract paintings reminiscent of the French country site, love, lust and all their intricacies.
